Presentation

Aveiro has in the secular depth of the creation and production of ceramics a privileged place, being synonymous of identity and assumed as a factor of innovation and economic, social and cultural development of the City, the Municipality and the Region.

Celebrating and projecting artistic ceramics as a distinct and distinctive art, and striving for its creative dynamics towards the future, the International Biennale of Artistic Ceramics of Aveiro was created in 1989, and celebrates this year its XVI Edition. It’s more than three decades of a consistent believe that gain, from 2017 on, an unprecedented investment made by the Municipality of Aveiro, on the path of affirmation and consolidation on a global scale.

The Biennale, as we affectionately call it, has in this edition its largest participation ever, with 565 artists and 915 works in competition. Present are 62 nationalities from the five continents, combining and showing, from Aveiro to the World, different geographies, conceptual lines, techniques and methodologies of artistic work with ceramic paste.

This ascending path is only possible thanks to the action and concatenation of a Whole, expressing here a deep thanks and recognition to our partners, namely the International Academy of Ceramics, the European Territorial Grouping of Ceramic Cities, the European Route of Ceramics and the Portuguese Association of City and Towns of Ceramics, which we have the honour to preside, as well as our dear and usual partners: our University of Aveiro, that is celebrating 50 years of life, and Vista Alegre, that in 2024 celebrates 200 years of existence.

Thanks to all who made possible the success of another Edition, especially to the Jury, who took the arduous decision to elect for exhibition only 9% of the works that came to us; to the national and international Artistic Community, the great protagonists of this whole process, and to our small but Huge Team of the Municipality of Aveiro for the intensity and dedication to the Biennale that will allow us to have, on the near horizon, a museum of Contemporary Art dedicated exclusively to Artistic Ceramics, whose project by the architect João Mendes Ribeiro we publicly present in this Biennial 2023.

We go on together, inviting everyone to enjoy the programming of this XVI Edition of the International Biennale of Artistic Ceramics of Aveiro, which extends until the end of January 2024, with the relevance of being the highlight exhibition that marks the starting program of Aveiro, Portuguese Capital of Culture 2024, living with us the singularity of having a Year as a Stage, at an Infinite Scenario.
