The exhibition presents the sculptural work of Aveiro potters, whose work has stood out in national artistic production. Evoking the greatest Aveiro devotions, the artworks, well modelled and with beautiful polychromies, come mainly from private collections and from the National Museum of Ancient Art, presented together for the first time and inviting visitors to the city where these works are still displayed.

Licínio Pinto and Francisco Pereira, prominent painters from Aveiro, played a decisive role in many of the railway tile compositions, as the result of their learning in the several factories where they worked, reinterpreting a national collective memory through photographs.

Tiles have left an indelible mark on of Aveiro landscape, shaping the urban environment through the covering of facades, figurative panels, toponymic plaques and even large identification panels or small details. With the first examples dating back to the 16th century and local production evident since the 19th century, “Aveiro Tiles” continue to be an internationally recognised brand today.

This treasure of quantity and variety has enabled the creation of several routes that demonstrate the importance of tiles. Set off to discover it with the help of the booklet available at the Museums and Municipal Tourism Office or book a guided tour promoted by the Museums of Aveiro.
